Breaking Apart Specimens
If you have a large object that you want to pull apart for individual slides, you’re going to need to know how to dissect it. To do this, I would highly advise you to first invest in a pair of small tweezers. There’s not really any other alternative (other than fingers) and tweezers will provide you with the precise control that you’re going to need to take apart your specimens.
Step One
The first thing to do is identify where the part that you want to dissect begins and ends. This will help you visualize what the final product should look like.

Step Two
Next, use one tweezer to gently hold down the larger specimen and use the other to grip the connecting point between what you want to take off. For example, if you want to take off an insect leg, place one tweezer on just below the start of the leg and use the other to gently secure the larger body.
Step Three
Finally, gently pull the two tweezers apart. You should do this carefully and slowly to minimize the risk of parts breaking or flying away when they detach.
